Can you please provide me with further details on the the type of photo that you are using and what layers are you merging together as I am not getting any quality decrease when I do a simple merge down

Hi, thanks for replying.

 

I'm not sure what you mean by type of photo? I am editing one of my photographs (high res).

 

I have been selecting areas of my image and then duplicating them, then merging them down. Each time I do the merge down, the quality decreases.

When you select a part of an image, you are choosing less pixels so by definition you have lower resolution overall - could it be something to do with this?

Does Photoshop do more display smoothing of pixelated images?
