Fonts and pdf

Recommended Posts

What kind(s) of fonts are these – TrueType, OpenType, PostScript Type 1 or a mixture of the above? What do you mean by "rubbish text"? What are you referring to as "the main font"?

Are you inspecting the result in Acrobat or a PDF viewer, or by importing it back into AD? Can you provide a sample *.afdesign file that demonstrates the problem?

Apologies for the string of questions, but you haven't given us much to go on.

Sorry, should have been clearer.

(1) Looks like Postscript Type 1s but not all (some of mine are rather old)

(2) With Monotype Bulmer the basic font sets ok but not ligatures

(3) Opening pdfs in Preview/Mail preview. Imported into AD still has the problem

Thanks

As a workaround for embedding issues, try converting all text to curves prior to export (or choose the appropriate setting in export options). Not a 100% solution but will do for most intents and purposes.

Thanks: the convert to curves is fine but you need to remember to uncovert if you think you're going back into the file to edit it again.

I Just manage to destroy the programme completely by directing the (excellent in every other way) glyph panel to a font which it didn't like. It won't run at all now, so use with care!

Alternatively, you may configure your own PDF export settings that always export fonts as curves...

In the Export dialogue hit [ More ] go to the "Embed fonts" drop-down menu and choose "Text as Curves". To save your preset, hit [ Manage Presets ] and choose "Create Preset"

In order to check your fonts, if you are in a mac, open the PDF in Preview. Sometimes in AD if you open the same document that you made a PDF from n exporting, when opening it will ask you about fonts if they were corrupt.

Also, a workmaround as mentioned is to convert the fonts to curves and then export, but remember to go back to document before you close it and command-z to step before converting to curve.

Also, upon importing a new font to Font Book - default font utility on a Mac- it will give you a warning wether the font is corrupt or an acceptable.
