Spherical Transform

Have you tried loading your equirectangular projection image (where the image is seamless, with the width equal to two times the height) and then selecting "Layer > Live Projection > Equirectangular Projection"?

 

Tutorial videos are available in the "Live Projections" section of the tutorial videos.
