Gear maker
I have created a shape and then subtracted another shape from it, then inside the subtracted shape I have 4 small islands. These small islands should be a solid blob, but are partially cut through. I haven't been able to get these to be solid. There are only 4 or 5 nodes on each. What is causing the cut? What am I doing wrong? There had been over a dozen islands, only these 4 gave me problems. They were all made using exactly the same process. Staff MattP Posted January 19, 2015 Staff Share Posted January 19, 2015 Hi Gearmaker, Is there any chance you could attach a file so that we can try to reproduce the problem and see what's going on? Thanks! :) Matt
Gear maker
Hi Matt, It had been attached. Oh well... See attached. Thank you. iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) with macOS Sierra
Staff MattP Posted January 19, 2015 Staff Share Posted January 19, 2015 Wow! Figured it out! It's the line weight you've got on the composite object - it's so wide that on a narrow shape it is actually cutting out a gap where the inside of one edge overlaps the inside from the opposite edge. It shouldn't really act this way in the long run, so I will look to change it, but there isn't really an island - it's only being caused because of the line weight. If you reduced the line weight (or increase it quite a bit) they wouldn't cause this overlap and then the 'island' would go away - or alternatively if you made the area slightly larger then the overlap will stop and the effect will go away. The final option is to just put this item as a separate shape with the same effect.
Gear maker
Matt, as usual you are right it is the width of the stroke of the compound layer. If I do it as a separate shape then the fx of the background, that isn't in the attached file, won't treat the edges as an edge. Which is necessary to my drawing. And if I reduce the width of the stroke to less than 14 pts then there are voids else where. I have some smaller islands/holes that don't get the voids. Don't know whey they are immune. I hope you can fix this. Silly me I know you can fix this, you can do wonders! Thank you.
