osang
I'm playing with the new Affinity Designer Customer Beta (1.0.21861) using the place image tool, and importing PDF files. Though it improve, but there are still problems with shadows, vector gradients, non-embedded image displayed in pdf but not showing in AD beta, and a non-outlined text in pdf doesn't display correctly in AD. Most of the time I'm creating pdf files for printing services using QuarkXpress, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. But pdf files created in AD seems fine when I import to other programs I'm using.
Dave Harris
I'm sorry to hear it's falling short for you. The PDF specification is huge, and there are portions we don't yet support. That said, it may be that you are experiencing bugs in areas we do try to support. Can I suggest you try using File Open rather than Place Image, and see if unchecking the text fidelity box makes a difference? For problems with shadows and vector gradients, can you attach an example PDF here, or send it support@seriflabs.com (referencing this thread)? If you are creating the files yourself, simpler examples that reproduce the problem would be appreciated.
osang
Hi Dave, I send it to support@seriflabs.com. :)
Dave Harris
Thanks; I've received those. I'll have a look later this week.
Dave Harris
I've now had a look and have identified a few problems. Ace EB Sale uses a mesh fill that we don't support (type 7 - Tensor-Product patch mesh). So unfortunately this gradient isn't going to work until we add vector mesh fills. Cultures in War suffered from a bug that caused images to lose alpha and get a white background. This will be fixed in the next beta. Is that what you mean by "non-embedded image"? If not, then could you explain what you do mean? Testshad suffered from some bugs in soft masks that made the shadows hard to see. These will be fixed in the next beta. In the Open panel, the names of missing fonts weren't getting displayed. This will be fixed in the next beta. You mention a problem with non-outlined text; presumably this was with Cultures in War. I'm not sure what you're referring to, possibly because I don't have all the fonts these documents use. We don't currently support embedded fonts. Could you also send the affected fonts to support@seriflabs.com (referencing this thread again)?
osang
Hi, Thank you for seeing the bugs. You mention a problem with non-outlined text; presumably this was with Cultures in War. Yeah, it looks fine in a pdf preview, or placed in InDesign or as a linked file in Illustrator. Files like this are supplied by my clients and I'll just print it. Anyway, I'll wait till AD support embedded fonts. As of now, I'm using AD in making invitations, business cards, simple brochure until AD supports thread text / text wrap like in Illustrator. :P
