Hello guys, I am new to AF Designer - just imported my ai file and it seems the layers of my ai file are not imported. What can I do to see all layers in AF Designer, as well, and be able to work on them?

hanky for your help

Hi sisa5

Welcome to the forums :)

Affinity Designer can only access the PDF stream included in AI files, which doesn't contain the file layer structure. So it isn't possible to access the layers in Designer unfortunately.

One can export (Save As) a pdf from AI with lauers, however and those layers and their contents will be in AD. And might as well unchecked the option to save an Illy file in the pdf too.

So MikeW, do I understand you right?

If I export a pdf with layers I see those layers in AD?

But if I export ai File with layers I don't see them in AD?

Whats an Illy file?

JFisher you are saying its not possible at all?

it would be rough if not - what is the point then, if I cannot work on my existing files... :-(

AD cannot open the native AI file. So its layers mean nothing to AD. I believe the pdf portion of an AI file that is embedded in an AI file is a single layer and that is what AD actually is opening when importing or opening an AI file...and that is assuming a particular AI file is saved with the PDF portion.

Illy = Illustrator. So if a pdf is saved from Illustrator with layers, then those layers and their contents are available in AD.
