How to create chrome knobs

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm new to the design world and I'm familiarizing with Affinity Designer, I think its great... Really enjoying my time using it...

Now, what I'm doing to tech myself the functionality is to go around stock graphic websites and pick up random stuff and see If I can recreate it myself (open content). Today I wanted to (re)create a knob control... such as:

And I just can't seem to figure out... obviously I started with a circle shape, added some Conical Fill with the Fill Tool and then zoned out trying to come up with "noise" to add to it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Laconia and welcome to the Affinity forums :)
Yes, in the past I have done (and still do sometimes if I find something interesting!) try and deconstruct and then reconstruct how packaging or logo designs may have originally been created.
It is a great way to learn this stuff.

As with most things “there’s more than one way to skin a cat” but I’ve attached here one possible method you might try. ;)

  • 1 year later...

How did you get the lines on the outer dial to go round in a clock-like manner?

A mini tutorial on that would be very helpful.

On the desktop versions it’s pretty easy to use ‘Power Duplicate’ for this, but since there’s no keyboard shortcut on an iPad you’ll probably find it less tedious to start with the Cog Tool, convert to curves, adjust the hole radius to be as big as the inner radius and then divide so that you can discard the pieces you don’t want.

I think you may be imagining it to be more difficult than it really is. :)

Hello DesignMeister,

I attach a drawing I did last year, as @Alfred says, it's not too difficult. It's not a tutorial, but you can explore the layers to understand how to proceed. I don't pretend my method is the best but it worked!
Then just apply a style to get the chrome effect.

Thank you both!

I will take a look and see if I can work out how you did it.

Thank you - much appreciated.
