File Save as and Export should be merged

Hi rzozaya1969,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

This was a design choice. There's also a few programs that work the same way as ours. Save As is reserved to save files on Affinity's native file format, while export is used to export to generic/non-native file formats.

I understand that.  But I just feel that it's like being moved to push your format for most time.  But the program is fine, I think it's great for a 1.5 version, it would be great to see what comes next!

Also, I'm using XNView as a browser, what I miss is that, when I modify a pic, and select export, the destination folder is different than what I used to open the file.  Is it because my viewer isn't passing the directory tree?  I think that if I just save it, it uses the right one, but if not, then it's a PITA finding the correct directory to store the images.

Actually I think the Export option should be removed altogether, that's what the Export Persona is for and it's well designed! 'Save As' is fine.

I find the design of the Export dialogue a bit of a curiosity, doesn't really fit in with the rest of the UI to my eyes and does cause confusion with users going by previous posts. I also suspect that rationalising all Export options to the Export Persona would fit better with future DAM software.

Regards

Hi rzozaya1969,

Affinity native format is the only one that supports all features in our programs keeping everything editable. So in a sense yes, it's the format you should use to save your projects.

Regarding the selected folder for export, currently Affinity picks the last folder used, not the folder from where the current file was opened. Some users already requested we change this and it may end up being changed but for now that's how it works. This has nothing to do with the image browser you are using to browse/open images.

Hi harrym,

The export dialog offers you a direct/quick way to export the entire file, an artboard or just a layer or object (check the Area dropdown) that you have selected in the Layers panel without having to create and setup slices for simple operations like these. I agree that the Export dialog doesn't "fit" that well in the Windows UI. This is due to the cross platform nature of the application. This dialog is similar to the the one you find in the Mac version where it's better integrated.

From my point of view Export has missing one feature - preview for web format like GIF, JPG or PNG. It was be very nice to change quality of picture and check at the same time how is affect filesize. It is a logical extension of Export from menu. When you like massive operation you use Export Persona.

Hi MEB,

Nice to read it! I make a lot of banners for our webpage. We have limited bandwidth. After switch from AI and PSD I miss preview. At the first I have to save file few times to set best option to get smaller output baner filesize.

This "design choice" isn't very consistent though.

"File > Open" can open any supported file; "File > Save As" can only save Affinity format files.

To be consistent, you should have File > Open only open Affinity files, and then add a File > Import option.

And once you do that, you'll realise how bad a design choice this really is.  The Export option shouldn't exist in its current state.  Save As should allow the user to save in any supported file format.  Which is pretty much how all other software works.
