Affinity Photo: Imported .eps file has gaps between vector shapes

Hi

 

I paid a designer to create a logo for me. They have done it using Adobe Illustrator and esported to .eps and .pdf for me. When I open the pdf file in Adobe Reader or Internet Explorer, the logo loos as expected. However, when I open both the .eps file and the .pdf file in Affinity Photo, there are gaps between the shapes/colours, which should be touching eachother with no gaps.

 

Is this a bug with Affinity Photo? As a result of the issues, the files provided to me are useless because I cannot do anything with them without there being a gap between the colours.

 

I have attached 2 screen captures of the problem - you can see the problem more clearly on the one where I have zoomed in - there are white pixels along the edge of the vector edges, even though the shap has no outline, just a fill. It's almost as if Affinity Photo is not anti-aliasing the edges correctly.

 

One thing I thought it might have been, is when AP tries to 'snap to pixels' so I turned that option off before opening the file but it made no difference.

 

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions appreciated!!!!

Hello Rob, did they also give you the AI file? 

 

In any case, if they did give you an AI file, upload it here. Or the PDF if you don't have an AI file. I'll be glad to take a look. I don't have APhoto, do have AD and the files are compatible (you can open an AD file with APhoto).

Hi Mike - thanks for the speedy reply. I've asked the designer the for .ai file, not sure if I'll hear back until next week though.

 

I do have the PDF - I just can't figure out how to attach it right now and the option is missing. I'll keep trying though!

The only portion that the Affinity products cab open of an AI file is the embedded pdf, assuming they use that option when saving. So the pdf would be what is useful for you if you don't have AI.

 

The small reply box doesn't have any means for attachments. The fuller Reply button gives access to it. Then one clicks a button to choose the attachment, then another button to actually attach it to the post.

Hi Rob123456789,

Those lines are probably the colour background bleeding through the edges of the shapes due to the antialiasing. One way to make them less noticiable is placing a shape below these objects with a similar colour to reduce the contrast with the background colour. Depending on how this was created in Illustrator there may be a way to overcome it, but without the Ai file is difficult to guess what can be done.

Well its the antialiasing that gets done somehow different from adobe.. 

in the new affinity 1.6 versions, never the less you now can use the new printdialog, if you want to print it..  and you can decide to use a higher dpi than the originals file dpi, which eleminates the antialiasing problem at last in the print..

 

never the less this still is a  very important problem , affinity should have a look in, becaus also CAD files printed for import and improvment in affinity designer and affinity Photo have the same Problem..

Tom Schülke - I agree it is it anti aliasing, I just tried creating a circle with segments and snapped the edges together - there are still gaps between the segments even when its created from scratch entirely in Designer. Exporting the file to jpeg and the problem still persists.

MEB - can you pass this on to the programmers/developers as this is definately a problem (see attached screenshot) as the white pixels are visible between the segments even though the edges are snapped to each other. It's most noticable on the far left bright red segment where is meets the slightly brighter segment. but the problem appears on all the segments where they butt up against eachother.

The problem comes and goes with vertical edges - for example with the rectangle tool. I can draw 2 rectangles and snap one up against the other and on most zooms levels there is a hairline gap (try it with 2 black rectangles to see). If I zoom in really really close the hairline eventually dissappears.

The Problem apears by far mor prominent, when you import CAD Plans as Architects do in their daily workroutine..    They usualy import several pdf files layered on each other one after the other to get a flexible Plan, they can improve. And they depend on embedded objects, because they have to change on a daily basis their designs while improving their competition work.

So they have to stick with embedded Pdf files, they dont want to rasterise, because this would kill the workflowimprovement of importing again and again changes in their competition.

In Photoshop this works out fine..  the pdf files get rasterised but still are linked to the external rasterformats.

In affinity, this is realy realy the bottleneck, that can kill the use of Affinity Photo for architects.  So i hope so much Affinity will listen to the architects too, and improve this workflow a lot.  

  1. Let pdf files get imported alternative as rasterised, while still beeing linked to external pdf files.
  2. let us exchange embedded or embeded linked layers by dragging alternative  files directely on top of affinity embedded layers, to replace them
  3. give us a futher shortcut ...  only this one shortcut could improve workspeed so much.....   Architects and Visualisation specialists produce Images with dozens of layer and masks.  We need a shortcut to additiveley select the pixelmasks...  strg+left mousebutton on the layer or mask already selects a layermask..  but Pleeeaaaaaassee...    strg+shift+left mouse button ....  would kill the slow workflow of selecting dozens of objects one after the other, store their masks to the channels editor, and after this adding them one ofter the other...   and you do this all the time in architectural visualisation...
  4. for embedded pdf files.... why cant i use the flood selec tool to select colors from my pdf ...  this is crucial to select parts of my printed CAD Plans..  At the moment i have to back up an embedded pdf file, to be able to import changes of my competition work, but never the less have to rasterise a copy of the embedded pdf file, to select parts of it.. for example all the different areeas of Grass ....   you wont do this by selecting hundred of green vektor triangles ... one afte the other...  so again. if i could import the pdf as rasterised, and still have it linked to en external file, ore still be able to use it as an embedded file.. this would do it all...
  5. Speeeeeeed..     Affinity is optimised for smaler works..     i did a comparison video...  thats ok. but could we change this behaviour for companies with real big images ?
