A = First ellipse.

 

B = First ellipse plus a 'cmd' drag copy.

 

C = Both ellipses converted to curves and using 'Break curve' cut at points X and Y.

Using 'Join curves' to get join at Y but using 'Close curve' to get a join at X produces a bad cusp which changes the shape of the objects. How do I get a a 'Sharp' cusp at X and Y?

You can get the same result subtracting the second ellipse (the copy) from the first.


The problem getting a sharp cusp using the method you describe is that you can't select with precision the intersection point on both ellipses to make a clean join. As soon as Ben improves the snapping and allow to snap to intersections it should be possible to break the ellipses exactly at the intersection, meaning you can then join both parts seamlessly.
