bwerne33
I took a picture of a car and first used the rectangular marquee tool to cover some parts of the license plate. After that I want to clean the license plate with the clone brush but it works not. Why?
Staff MEB Posted May 1, 2017 Staff Share Posted May 1, 2017 Hi bwerne33, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) Assuming you have the correct layer selected, check if it's a Pixel layer type (look at the label in parenthesis after the layer's name in the Layers panel). If it's identified as an Image* layer, right-click on the layer and select Rasterise... to convert it to a Pixel layer. Then you should be able to select and clone as you intended. If that's not the issue can you please post a screenshot of the application window with the layers panel visible so we can see what's going on? Here's how to attach an image/file to the post just in case. *Image layers are considered objects in Affinity. You can apply transforms to them (rotate, scale, etc) but you can't change their content - the pixels -. They retain all original image data so you can transform them without losing quality. To work at a pixel level you must convert them to Pixel layers. Affinity will use the DPI specified in the Document Setup dialog for the rasterisation. bwerne33
Hello, I already tried to attach a screenshot, but something went wrong. New try :-)
- S -
I took a picture of a car and first used the rectangular marquee tool to cover some parts of the license plate. After that I want to clean the license plate with the clone brush but it works not. Why? If you turn off layer visibility for the four letter layers that are clipped to the top car layer (by unticking them), does the clone brush tool work as expected on the top layer then? R C-R
In your screen shot, the Clone brush is set to a 6 pixel radius with zero hardness. While it should have an effect with those settings, it will be minimal. As a test, maybe try a larger radius and/or higher hardness to see if the effect is more noticeable? bwerne33
Thank you for the hints, I tried both. R C-Rs hint with 12 pixel radius and 100% hardness but there is still no effect. Should I upload the file?

You can upload the file if you want and I'll see if I can reproduce it. In addition, there was a similar issue reported in the bugs section regarding the Inpainting and Healing brushes stopped working. I don't know whether your issue with the Clone brush is related to this or not, however you could also try resetting Affinity Photo as per Post No.6 in the below link and see if that resolves the issue. - S -
It's because even though the marching ants aren't visible, there's an active selection in the document. 1) Go to Select > Deselect, to deselect the selection 2) Click on the top 'Car' layer again 3) The Clone Brush tool will now work OK.
