What are the purple (out)lines

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm in the process of re-creating a company logo as a vector drawing. I've done so by taking a bitmap of the logo (which by itself is skewed), putting the characters upright (by skewing in the opposite direction in AD), drawing the characters using the Pen tool, and, finally, skewing the logo back from its upright position to the original position. This worked quite well and i'm happy with the result.

One thing that bothers me is that some of the elements have a purple outline while others haven't. I also noticed that the purple outlines remained in their original upright position. I'm wondering what this is? I've seen before in AD that these purple outlines are there, but having seen this behaviour i'm really confused.

Who can help?

The reason why some objects are purple outlined while others don't is because Affinity Designer only highlights six objects as snapping candidates at the same time. If you want to add one that wasn't originally included, just mouse over it a few seconds until the purple outline appear and it will be added to the snapping candidates list.

Regarding your screenshot, the only object i'm seeing skewed there is the background bitmap (locked). It looks like you have not skewed any vector characters at all. The characters seen on the screenshot may have a thin stroke that's being covered by the purple outlines. But since the screenshot is cropped i may be wrong.

It would help if you posted the file so we can look at it more closely to see what's going on.

I don't have any problems with skewed objects and snapping candidates outlining in my system.

Thanks for this. I now understand this is about snapping candidates, that there's a limit of showing 6 at the same time, and that locked objects can't be added (for which i didn't have any intention anyway).

I had already concluded that everything worked as expected, i just didn't understand the indication for snapping candidates.

By the way, i'd like to add that i really like how AD made it possible for me, as an absolute beginner in vector drawings, to re-create this logo. Ronnie McBride's training course and the AD Review eMagazine also helped.

The purple outlines are probably to highlight candidates for snapping. If so, then if you untick Show Snapping Candidates in the Snapping Options they should go away. I don't know why they don't get skewed.

you are the boss, cat!
