Constant Unhandled Exceptions - Windows 10 1607 Build

Recommended Posts

Im getting very tired of loosing work due to this unhandled exception bug.  Seems to happen when copying and pasting images in from a browser, editing the copied picture and then copying some of the picture into another picture (confusing i guess).

No crash reports logged, just unhandled exception and the app crashes.

Please help, i only purchased the software the other day.  never experienced this crashing in the trial version.

Hi,

Assuming you're working with Affinity Photo,if you try saving the images to your computer before you open them in AP, does that help?

Jeff

Long-time user of Serif products, chiefly PagePlus and PhotoPlus, but also WebPlus, CraftArtistProfessional and DrawPlus.  Delighted to be using Affinity Designer, Photo, and now Publisher.

Yes im using Affinity Photo - sorry should have clarified that.

From my testing it seems saving files does help however i have experienced crashing just copying and pasting items between two images.

Hi Eximo84,

I've just had a quick try of this myself and have been unable to reproduce any crashes.

Could you give a bit more information please:

What browser were you copying images from?

What images were you copying? How big were they etc?

What kind of editing were you doing?

Were you pasting the edited image from Affinity Photo back into a new Affinity Photo image?

Thanks

Hi,

Mainly from Chrome.

Just background images or game art - for example I have a template which I created which looks like a steam gift card.  The document size is 2480px x 1748px

I'm setting up a new layout for the Witcher 3 for example, I am using this image as by backdrop to the template: http://cogconnected.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/The-Witcher-3-art-08.jpg

I then copy in this picture as a transparent logo: http://hydra-media.cursecdn.com/witcher.gamepedia.com/3/38/TW3_English_logo.png

At first it crashed as soon as I copied it in, then I managed to get it copied in by saving it to the disk and then opening it as a new image.  I copied it from a new image into my picture but the app crashed when I tried resizing the new layer.

For reference I am editing a picture which was originally made in Pixelmator, exported into a PSD.  Not sure if that is the crux of the issue here as if I create a new blank picture and paste in these items it doesn't crash.

Maybe I just need to recreate the whole template in Affinity Photo instead.

Thanks

Would you be able to attach that PSD please? Just tried myself using a new document and like you, I couldn't reproduce the crash.

Actually its happening on afphoto files too that were created from scratch.  Example here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mdu92ut5ocyfny3/Master%20-%20temp.afphoto?dl=0

Steps to crash for me:

1. Open Master-temp.afphoto

2. Open this link (im using chrome) - https://cdns.iconmonstr.com/wp-content/assets/preview/2014/240/iconmonstr-steam-4.png

3. Right click image and copy image

4. In AP go file new from clipboard

5. Rasterise layer

6. Select Flood Selection Tool - click ADD button also

7. Select black areas

8. Go to Select > Invert Pixel Selection

9. Go to Select > Refine Selection

10. Set Border Width to 15%

11. Delete selection

12. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Invert Adjustment

13. Merge Visable layer

14. Deselect orignal layer and adjustment layer, ensure only the new merged layer is selected

15. Select All

16. Copy

17. Paste into Master-Temp.afphoto image

18. Select Move Tool, resize new layer

As soon as i resize i get unhandled exception code 0xC000005

My guess is that it's likely related to something like this:  http://www.pcworld.com/article/2875740/nvidia-explains-geforce-gtx-970s-memory-performance-issues-admits-error-in-specs.html

Considering those problems, and the fact that copying puts the image or whatever into memory, then it may be going straight to VRAM rather than straight RAM.

This may also be useful:

Have you updated your graphics driver recently?  If not, you may want to.  If so, you might want to roll back to an earlier driver.  Having said that, it may just be a hardware issue that can't be solved...assuming it's your card.

I also noticed that you've overclocked your CPU.  Try setting it to default speeds and see what happens.

Hi eximo84,

I've tried this using your recipe, however I'm still not able to get it to crash. Are you able to do a screen recording showing your steps at all please?

Sure, ill try again and record the steps or even better ill record my desktop with OBS and upload a video to youtube.

It might well be my overclock, i dont believe any of my hardware is at fault as this PC is a gaming machine and i have no other issues with games or apps.

Also ive experienced this crash on other machines including my Surface Pro 4.
