Selecting by tones/colours/shape

Recommended Posts

Hello,

What is the best way to select a specific tone, colour or shape? (similar to the magic wand in Photoshop)

For example, in the attached pic, I want to select just the light grey portion (in order to change the tone or remove it completely).

Thanks!

Hi d.payne! Just a suggestion but to minimize spam you might want to change your forum name to something not so obviously an e mail address.

You can use the select tab then tonal range "Highlights, Mid tones or Shadows" or you can use the selection brush from the tools side bar.

The Flood Select Tool (or 'Magic Wand', as it is commonly known) often works well in scenarios like this.

The Select tab - Midtones, Shadows, Highlights does not seem to be selecting anything for me. I put this logo element on it's own artboard - within the same file window - of another artboard I am working on.  The selection brush seems to go over into other colour areas easily.

Is it that you can only effectively use the selection tool/features when the image you want to select from is open in it's own window?

Doesn't the Flood Select Tool produce a usable result for you?

Do you mean the 'Selection Brush Tool'?

No, I mean the 'Magic Wand' tool just below that on the left-hand toolbar.

Moto, are you maybe using Affinity Designer rather than Affinity Photo? If so, there is no Flood Select Tool in that app.

Thanks, R C-R. I overlooked the fact that Moto mentioned artboards in the last couple of posts. (The reference to Photoshop in the OP made me think we were discussing Affinity Photo rather than Designer.)

I used "Select sampled color" and then a levels adjustment to mop up a very faint halo that was left.

Re: Selection Brush Tool.... that worked too. I'm sure that you have "snap to edges" checked, but just know that brush size as well as motion/speed when selecting, count in the result. This method was a little more labor intensive, that's why I preferred the above.
