Help with separating a shape

Recommended Posts

Recently, I was testing something out and I created a shape. I tried to separate this shape into 3 parts. First, I completely cut part of the shape out. Then, to separate the rest of the shape into 3 parts, I tried using the pen tool to create two lines where I would like the shape to intersect. I did this to try to separate the shape into 3 parts which I would color differently. But, when I use fill on the shape, it fills the whole shape and not each individual part. I think this is because the two curves I created from the pen tool aren't combined. But, I am not sure how I would be able to separate this shape into three parts so that I can change each part into a different color. I was watching a tutorial of someone doing something similar on illustrator and their live fill tool colored this area in. As I know that Affinity Designer doesn't have a live fill tool, is there any way I can achieve this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!  :)

By, the way, I attached my file to the end of this so that you can understand what I am doing

Yes, that's why it doesn't do what you wanted. You need to ungroup the group, choose the Node Tool and break both curves in strategic places (using the 'Break Curve' button in the Action section of the Context toolbar) and then 'Join Curves' (also  in the Action section of the Context toolbar) to create three separate shapes that you can fill. You're going to require two copies of the small separator lines, so after you've isolated them with 'Break Curve' actions I suggest that you copy them so that they're available for pasting back in later on.

Oh, I see. Thank you so much for the assistance! I didn't realize that breaking and joining curves can be so useful for things like this. :D
