Okay so I know how to use masks to overlap and create an image, but how do I use a mask to overlap characters to make them look like they are hugging.

 

ex: a child hugging a teddy bear. part of the hand is behind the bear but the other arm is in front.

If you have an image of a child with outstretched arms and you want to show one arm in front of the teddy bear, you need to place one copy of the child image on the canvas, place the teddy bear image on top and place a second copy of the child image on top of that (exactly aligned with the first child image). Now crop the top image so that only the arm is showing in front of the teddy bear.

Neither of those girls looks like a teddy bear ;) but did you try following the instructions in my previous post?

let me know and I'll post my Affinity file (created in Affinity Designer because that's what I used for redrawing the girl and adding the teddy bear, but equally doable in Affinity Photo).
