Petar Petrenko
Try to convert this excersize from Illustrator to Designer. You can practice a lot of features of Illustrator and Designer and you can see what features Designer still needs. BTW, you will have to buy some fonts (200+ in 19 families) for $29 but they worth it every cent. https://www.designcuts.com/tutorials/design-typographic-movie-themed-magazine-cover/?utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=A+free+sample+from+our+current+fonts+bundle&utm_campaign=0902017_TheCompleteFontLoversLibrary_TutorialBundle baal_uriel 1 Quote All the latest releases of Designer, Photo and Publisher (retail and beta) on MacOS and Windows. 15” Dell Inspiron 7559 i7 ● Windows 10 x64 Pro ● Intel Core i7-6700HQ (3.50 GHz, 6M) ● 16 GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600 MHz (8GBx2) ● NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5 ● 500 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD ● UHD (3840 x 2160) Truelife LED - Backlit Touch Display 32” LG 32UN650-W display ● 3840 x 2160 UHD, IPS, HDR10 ● Color Gamut: DCI-P3 95%, Color Calibrated ● 2 x HDMI, 1 x DisplayPort 13.3” MacBook Pro (2017) ● Ventura 13.6 ● Intel Core i7 (3.50 GHz Dual Core) ● 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 ● Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB ● 500 GB SSD ● Retina Display (3360 x 2100)
MikeW
But if one doesn't want to spend the few dollars for the fonts, such a thing can be made with whatever fonts one has. I'm not seeing how with this particular design there is anything in AD missing/still needs. But I do agree about tutorials for other applications being of value. Not only for what AD/APhoto needs, but by following along with tutorials for say AI/PS one can also learn not only how the Affinity applications work, but how to achieve similar or better work with what is available in the Affinity applications. One of my hobbies is the recreation of magazine & book covers, and posters. And there are not tutorials for those specific items. It's figuring out what one needs to do based only upon appearance and then how to achieve that in the application being used. It is amazing how much I learn from such a seemingly simple exercise. Agreed, although if you do want those particular fonts then the bundle deal is very good value. Laura Worthington's Renata font on its own is usually $25, and her Fairwater Collection costs more than twice that much. MikeW
Eh, I read through it. I've done too many typographical posters to want to do another today. Two items stand out: Rotating individual letters and keeping them live text. Optical Kerning. Rotated Letters. Dunno if there are more. So yep, as I wrote, if I was not using Auntie Illy, I would need to convert the text string with the rotated characters (unless AD can really do them) and rotate individually. Optical Kerning. This is a big who cares to me--it isn't always an appropriate choice in AI/ID and like they do earlier in the tut, one can just kern and track in AD anyway. Dunno if I missed anything. Please feel free to list anything I may have missed.

Having over 100k typefaces (some of which are LW's), the only way I justify a purchase is if I foresee a need. These kind of font deals come around all the time. And there are a few web sites that give away one or more fonts each and every week if you sign up for them--as well as vector and raster freebies. I simply find the expenditure difficult to justify. However, I agree with all of your observations.
