32 bit Windows 10

Recommended Posts

Request a 32 bit version of Affinity Photo be released for Windows 10.

I have an admittedly old PC, but it is a 2.2GHZ, quad processor that I am sure could handle Affinity Photo.

Specifically:

AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor, 2200 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

I recently upgraded my Vista system with a clean install of Windows 10 mostly so I could run Affinity Photo. My mistake for overlooking 32 vs. 64 bit.

I am running Affinity Photo on my laptop and would prefer to run it on my desktop also.

Admittedly I'm not a hardware geek, however are you sure your PC won't run 64-bit Windows anyway?

A quick search of your processor comes up with this link, which says "64-bit Computing - Yes", indicating that it's a 64-bit processor:

It's possible that this CPU information is incorrect or that even though your processor is 64-bit, it's missing other required features to run 64-bit Windows.  However, it may be worth reading through the below article, as you may be able to just clean install Windows 10 using Microsoft's Media Creation tool to download the 64-bit version of Windows 10.

There was no direct upgrade path from Windows Vista to Windows 10, so presumably your PC was upgraded to Windows 7 or 8 at some point before the Windows 10 upgrade, in which case it could be the case that it has just installed the 32-bit version because that's what version of Vista you originally had.

The big (but by no means the only) problem with 32 bit is the 4gb physical RAM limit (which amounts to 3gb usable on most machines - if the 3gb switch doesn't make the machine unstable): running Photo on such a small amount of RAM will be a joyless experience, which is why most software companies no longer provide or support 32 bit products.

There are also dependency issues: most modern 64 bit programmes rely on native OS functions that simply aren't available in 32 bit operating systems, so Serif would need to code their own alternatives - and all for a very rapidly diminishing target audiience.
