How do you reload an image in Affinity Photo?

Recommended Posts

I can't figure out how to do something so basic as reloading an image. This is typically done when you have the image open in 2 applications at the same time and you're editing it in both. When you do a save in the other application you need to reload the image to see the changes. The other application I'm using Infinity Photo with is Modo, a 3D application. Modo automatically reloads the image as it detects that the file was save in the external paint program. You also manually reload images.

There have been lots of changes since then

How do you reload an image please, I can't find how!

I don't think this has changed:

You would need to close and re open the file for the changes to show.

For my workflow, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Linked images in APhoto will be automagically updated if changed and saved in an external application

To make this happen in real time ensure this option in Preferences is enabled...

  • Automatically update linked resources when modified externally.

Linked images

I don't think that's the subject here.
If you open an image in Photo directly, it becomes "detached" from the actual file on the drive and the content is only in its memory (or a temp file somewhere, what do I know…).
Sometimes, that's a Good Thing™, other times it's not.

Whereas many other apps keep track about the actual position and status of an open file, and will ask you how to proceed if they detect that the file has been edited by another app in the meantime, moved, deleted, etc.

And other apps my lock the file they've opened to prevent any editing outside.
