Mr. K
Are there settings to snap to points of other objects for alignment purposes? I want to grab the center handle of a rectangle and drag it to make its edge align with another rectangle on another part of my drawing. Can this be done? Staff MEB Posted November 25, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 25, 2014 Have you checked the Snapping Manager (View -> Snapping Manager). There's some options to align to other objects (check bounding boxes) while some are still being developed (currently grayed out). Additionally both the Node and Pen Tool have local snapping options themselves (see context toolbar) which should help in some situations. Ben (one of the developers) is working to improve snapping even more soon. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Mr. K
I have all the snap settings on that can be on. I can't snap a midpoint to a midpoint, or a midpoint to any other point.
Staff MEB Posted November 26, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 26, 2014 Is this what you're trying to achieve? Note that enabling all settings can turn the process more difficult (notably if you enable Snap to units: Pixels). mid_point_snap.mov Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
Mr. K
I've been trying to snap one image's bounding box to the bounding box of another image where the images are offset. I think I get how it works now, and your movie is helpful, thanks. Are there settings to make acquiring snap points faster and the relative distance to acquire a snap point greater? And a setting to make snapping more aggressive?
Staff Ben Posted November 27, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 27, 2014 You can set the snapping tolerance in the Snapping Manager - it's a value in screen pixels. We default to 8 pixels, but I use 15 if I am doing simple layouts. Not really sure what you mean by "aggressive"!? Mr. K
By aggressive I mean really snap like jump to the snap point. I increased the tolerance setting. That helps. Thanks. Now is there a way to speed up the snapping? Seems slow to acquire snap points.
Staff Ben Posted November 28, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 28, 2014 Again, not sure what you mean. Snapping isn't restricted by timing - it works when you move an object within tolerance of a snapping candidate. The quicker you get your mouse there, the quicker it will find a target. The only thing that might skew the perception of speed is that we fade in the snapping indicators. The object snaps immediately when in range, and you should see the object jump. In the case of the Pen and Node tools, you will get immediate feedback at the cursor position as the live curve nodes change colour. We then fade in the lines that show what objects you are snapping to after a brief pause. This is intentional so as to not create a huge amount of distraction while moving an object in broad motions. Only when you focus in more slowly do you get all the lines. Mr. K
I think it's something with the file I'm testing. It was created in Illustrator CS5. I attached it here. Please look at it. Test.afdesign
Staff Ben Posted November 28, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 28, 2014 Can you describe what you're actually trying to do. I can snap things ok in this file. What is it you expect to happen? Staff Ben Posted November 28, 2014 Staff Share Posted November 28, 2014 Ah - I do see that the snapping candidate outlines aren't showing for text items, even when they are in the candidate list. That's a bug I'll fix. Apart from that - seems to allow snapping to bounding boxes fine.
