Convert Raster or Image to Vector Shapes

Recommended Posts

Not bad at all. Last week i purchased a tool in the AppStore which was on sale, but for straight forward vectors (i.e. a logo made from letters) the vectorisation.org tool does a much better job (less nodes, sharper corners...).

Affinity Photo - Affinity Designer - Affinity Publisher | macOS Sonoma (14.2) on 16GB MBP14 2021 with 2.4 versions

Here are two free online converter which I use. Very good and fast for simple graphics.

http://www.vectorizer.io

thanks for these links! Always wondered whether that was possible.. ;) I went to the first one, however, and it asks you what format I want to export my vector (?) file to:  SVG, EPS, PS, PDF or DXF.

What is the difference between all these formats? What do I choose? What's the best/most common?

Will they all work with Affinity apps?

Is there a format that I can send to someone using adobe software, and then back to me to work further on in Affinity? (As long as Adobe rents software instead of just selling it I'm NEVER going there - I don't like monthly/yearly payments, especially when what you're paying for is never going to be yours). But would like to be working on formats that work on both Affinity and Adobe.

Also, does the quality of the original image matter (not "too" bad obv..)?

These formats all contain the same information, so you could use any of them, other than DXF.  I would suggest SVG or PDF in that order.  You can open svg files in any Affinity app, though  if you wish to further edit the file, you would best use Designer.

I find that vectorizer.io (probably they have improved their algorithm in the last five years) does a very good job with complex drawings with images with gradients and more colours. It is not free, a few euros for a week of unlimited use or €10 a month, but it is definitely worth it.
