yogladman
Just started using Affinity and have noticed differences when loading the same RAW file compared to Adobe ACR. The histogram when RAW file is loaded into Affinity is bunched over to the left, the same file when loaded in ACR is placed in the middle of the histogram. The White Balance when the file is loaded into Affinity is Temp 5599 Tint -5 compared to the as shot White Balance in ACR of Temp 5650 Tint -9 When loading files that have been deliberately underexposed in order to retain detail in the highlights I am finding it extremely difficult to achieve a result anywhere near what I can achieve in Photoshop or Lightroom. An help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have attached images highlighting the differences.
Kodiak
… I am finding it extremely difficult to achieve a result anywhere near what I can achieve in… Right… welcome to the club of confusion. Some years ago, Affinity was not on the market then, I wanted to move my operations from film to digital as the D3X with its 24MP was available. I had a hard time getting to the same results than with film when I heard of "engines". "It's all in the choice of engine" a colleague told me… admitting in the same breath that he did not find the right one. Later in the dis- cussion, he told me that the UI, the multiple sliders and the thinking behind them were also to be considered. I was, like you, lost and confused. I left my new D3X aside and went on with the P2, the RZ67 and the F5, all on film. I needed to invest a tad more time at learning and studying the options between the work assignments. I needed 5 months… and I found (for me!) the right tool. What you have to look for is a real dedicated RAW converter… as no library manager and no pixel editor will do any good in this. Good luck in your quest! PaulHfx
I have to agree with yogladman, every RAW photo I bring into the develop persona has the histogram all jacked up on the left. Also, as you can see in the picture, the histogram changes when going into the Photo mode. Paul EDIT: Just noticed a lot of posts on this subject, hopefully it will get fixed soon. Kodiak
• When I learned the Photo could develop RAW files I was all hopeful and excited at the idea to try it… but was disappointed within 5 minutes. As much as I believe AF Photo will replace PS for me as pixel editor, I realized that, for my operations, the Raw conversion is not that yet as… one can only work on a single file at the time and the controls are illogical to me, too close to LR and not close enough to real RAW conversion. I don't believe that AF Photo is the right tool to learn RAW converting at this point…maybe with later improvements. I could not imagine teaching or mentoring sessions on RAW processing with it and make it fun as it should be. Jacquot
So it's not just me! I'm taking a beginner course on digital processing which uses Lightroom. There are no courses available locally on Affinity. My thought was that I'd learn something in Lightroom and then bring it home and try to replicate the same basic techniques in Affinity. I was totally confused when images I'd taken for my course (meant to be low-key, high-key, and mid-range) did not appear anything like that in Affinity--though they did in LR. This is all VERY CONFUSING for a beginner. I would have thought the histograms would be similar if not the same for a photo straight out of the camera.
