Affinity and OBS broadcasting software

Recommended Posts

* I posted a similar question several months ago while the Windows version was still in beta, now that it's out I figured asking it again, maybe someone found a solution by now.

I want to livestream working in Affinity Designer and use OBS for that. In OBS you can chose for Display Capture which capture everything you see, literally everything, so I don't want that. Instead, I want to use Window Capture which only captures the window you select it to cap, in this case the Designer window.

The problem: it only captures the User Interface, not the Canvas.

I know this is related with the technology used to render everything on the Canvas, I believe it's OpenGL, DirectX, or maybe Affinity is using something else(???).

Has anyone managed to get this working? I don't think Affinity finds this important to help me with, but streaming for me means an audience and new commissions, so it is for me.

Hi Ambiroa,

I spent a few hours one afternoon trying everything to get OBS to pick up the canvas but everything that I tried didn't work I'm afraid. It is quite odd as it picks up the canvas on the Mac just fine. Hopefully this is something we can resolve in the future.

Oh man thank you so much for all the effort. Yes I really hope this can be solved, I would have no problem at all promoting Affinity on my stream, but it's a bit awkward if I can only show the UI haha :P

I've been thinking, there is obviously be a technical difference between Display and Window Capture, that difference is somehow able to pick up the canvas, is it able to be reserved-engineered? Hmmm... interesting that it does work on Mac.

Well, just for curiosity I downloaded OBS, installed and opened Affinity Photo... These are the settings I used and the canvas appeared.

Oooh hey @firstdefence!
Thanks for testing – with your settings I'm able to capture the canvas as well, nice!
It's the Capture Method that's responsible for displaying everything correctly.
It's set to Automatic for me, after changing it to Windows Graphics Capture it works fine. 👍
