I don't know whether it's possible in AD to join two open paths and weld the end points afterwards. A common scenario is to draw half a face, mirror it, and make it a whole face. There is a "Combine" command in pathfinder. But it will close two paths separately. Even if I open them afterwards, it seems to be impossible to weld the end points with a pen tool. Make sure you have Snap to selected curves activated in the snap section on the context Toolbar for the Node Tool.
