So I have this client project for a legal department that want something "edgy" ( how I hate that word) Anyway, I wanted to try and pull of this fo 3d look. This is not final but this exploration taught me a little bit about the 3d effects in the fx panel. I will definitely have to play wit that feature more but it quite powerful!

This entire piece was created in Affinity Designer. I amazed by this application everyday!

Cool stuff, Ronnie - the difference between the two pieces is quite remarkable in terms of feel

Thanks Matt! Yah, I thought so too. I definitely thought it was worth sharing. It shows that with a slight change of the same image you can really change the feel of an image. So many things to try so little time to play. Honestly, what impresses me is the the speed at which I can test things like this in Affinity Designer! It really just so remarkably fast!

Edward-de-Bono-c-Gil-Dekel.jpg

Yep, that works for me Ronnie. Both images are the same and different at the same time, just like a skyline at night and day, but this definition doesn't do these great pictures justice.

Let me explain; imagine a bar of chocolate squares (Say Cadbury's for example) opened up in the foil and paper wrapper; now imagine that same chocolate bar in someone's hand. The first picture said tease, not now... you'll have to wait for it. The second picture is the delivery; yes, you can have it now. (Just like the 24th/25th December approach to presents). AKA tease then please, surely that's edgy?

This picture comparison is pure Edward de Bono's school of thought, subtle is powerful: this is why the anime film Akira was so revered, with it's attention to night time shading. Mmmh, lesson well you have learnt, young Jedi ;)

This very clever guy allowed/taught/encouraged me, when I was 11 years old, to think in such a way I could see things properly. In the same way CartoonMike made my images of Stewie Griffin become something I COULD DO. Peel away the mystery and reveal the individual elements step-by-step.

This is the true power of affinity; power at your finger tips - not at the bottom of a pile of manuals.

Sir you have a illustrative way with words!  I like how you articulated your thoughts on this. Believe it or not I have read the manual. but most of what I learned comes from tinkering with different aspects of what's available. I try not to get too caught up in what's not there and just focus on what is there. I accept Affinity like I accept people. You are who you are so let me appreciate you for who you are. The cool thing is Affinity is like any beautiful fat caterpillar...one day she will be a beautiful butterfly. :)

Thanks for the kind words Peter!

Ronnie, thankyou for your kind words. I prefer dragonflies by the way (helicopters/biplanes/Art Nouveau inspiring).

My skills are indeed linguistic, who else (but me) could write an essay on the 1986 nuclear Chernobyl disaster, with the final words "Bad day at the office dear?" she said to her weary husband leaning into the hallway, "Um, you could say that, I've only gone and polluted half of the western hemisphere.." Got an A for that in English Lit, for that...the only A I got .

I also enjoy TV adverts as they would be my specialist subject on Mastermind. Good graphic designers, pro guys like yourself should team up with wordsmiths (me?) who write good copy. Together producing winning adverts (another story). I have recently found the website the Chipshop awards, a place where all those bad taste adverts can stop hiding and can be seen in their true glory/gory.

For example my local bus service is run by a firm called Stagecoach, as they are not very punctual to say the least...so my copy would read something like this...Stagecoach: forever held up. Subtle!

Ps what did you think of my Stewie Griffin pic? All comments welcome.

Well done Ronnie, keep it up.

That's good enough for the next Nintendo release of Starwing! A subtle blend of (yellow) 16 bit graphics; the space ship. Going right up to the energising (red and yellow) plasma/laser beam; bringing the graphics of the SNES and the Gamecube together.

One of the best Nintendo games ever!

And for a certain DJ's audio pleasure...

Use 4K video downloader if you want to save it till later.

Track 5 is very prog rock (Early Genesis/Hawkwind/Ozric tentacles); my favourite of the lot.

Yup,  it came of a cartridge in 1993! This is pre MP3 days, when the IC component responsible was nicknamed the square penny. There should be something to stir up the mix!

Enjoy!

The reason why I like Edward de Bono (then, the Sun headline makers, Ronnie Barker, Peter Gabriel) is this:

  • Select your facts/info, variety is key here
  • Mix them up
  • Decide whether to add, enhance, rhyme, alliterate, quote, misquote, or plainly plagiarise etc.

Either way there is a way/tool that just works. Hmm, that sounds like AD/DP. The easier the tool is to master, then the easier and therefore more powerful it will be to use: hopefully the better the end result.

Try this for size:

An 80 year old man dies and goes to hell: where he sees his older friend in bed with a beautiful women 60 years younger than him. He asks if this is heaven and not hell: as he was really confused at this point. To which his friend said ..."No this really is Hell, her Hell: I am her punishment." He boasted with a twinkle in his eye...It's hard not to think of a grey-haired version of Glen Quagmire from Family Guy at this point.

If Edward de Bono was an illustrator, then I'm sure that he would be an AD fan. Think differently, think better, work wonders.

How strange you should mention that - I commented the same to my husband and daughter as we walked past their windows this afternoon. More specifically, I said that the windows (black white and gold jewel cuts) made me think of skeuomorphic, and as soon as wen entered, the models were on a plinth made, beautifully, of red triangles looking like shaded, transparent, red shards. I was impressed :)
