Recommended Posts

  • 1 year later...

Open up a pictures file folder windows explorer. Click on view on the top. It opens another area. Click on the options area on the top right. Go to view. Under the files and folder area, uncheck always show icons and never thumbnails. Then click on ok.  It should show the photos.

Did anyone ever come up with a solution to this?  We are still having this problem, and there doesn't seem to be an actual clear cut fix to this.

In your Affinity preferences, General, have you specified the option to "Save thumbnails with documents"?

You need to download the Raw Image Extension from Microsoft

AP saves files in its own format and is supplied with a codec to handle it - the MS extension isn't involved.

I had the same problem described above  - in widows explorer all i saw was all the RAW files with the pink Affinity logo and the same when i opened the files through Affinity Photo , i downloaded Raw Image Extension and that fixed the problem

The op's problem was that aphoto files didn't display - raw images were ok.  Installing the MS extension is a solution to a different problem :)

I just see the afphoto logo instead of a thumbnail of the image.

The problem occurs when I save the file in a OneDrive folder. Photoshop works fine in this setting.

I use the OneDrive folder to sync to the cloud. OneDrive is important for my workproses and is part of the Office 365 familiy.

When do you have a solution?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, Edwin.

Does the problem happen in other folders, too, or only in the OneDrive folder?

Do you have the option enabled to save a thumbnail with your .afphoto files?

Thank you for the quick rsponce.

Yes I enabled the opstion in preferences.

It occurs only in OndeDrive folders. When I save a file in a folder other than a OneDrive synced folder, the thumbnail is visible. Savind in a Synced folder (for example images) there is no thumbnail.

Thumbnail No: C:\Users\edwin\OneDrive\images

Thumbnail Yes: C:\Users\edwin\images

Thanks for the additional info, Edwin.

That sounds to me like it's a Windows or a OneDrive problem. But to confirm, if you save to OneDrive, then use Windows Explorer to copy the file to a different folder, do you see the thumbnail in the new folder? If so, that really points the finger at Windows or OneDrive, I think.

Yes I already tested this. When I save it to Onedrive folder and the copy it to a simple lokal drive, the thumbnail is visible. But the conclusion you make is to quick. All other programs don't have this issue. If I look at a .psd file on Onedrive online, I see the thumbnail. A .afphoto file is not recognized by Onedrive. I think you need to add your extension to a common recognizable file format. Adobe formats are all known and are shown correctly.

I think Affinity should add/request their file formats to this list:

Unfortunately not. Affinity should contact Microsoft and add there extension to OneDrive.

I agree. I have recently started using OneDrive to ensure all my image and document files are automatically backed up to a cloud server, now I can't see thumbnail images of Affinity files, whether afphoto, afdesign or afpub. If I copy the files to a folder not controlled by OneDrive, I can see the thumbnails again.

I believe this is an issue that Serif need to take up with Microsoft

PS I also note that I have a similar issue with ORF files, which is the Olympus RAW format. Even though the Microsoft website says this format is supported by OneDrive, it does not work. Again , it is fine in a folder outside of OneDrive. So Affinity files are not alone in this issue.

PPS I also took others advice and downloaded XnView in the hope that this would resolve the issue in the meantime but , again, OneDrive proved to be the stumbling block. As much as I like Windows 10, Microsoft are not very pro-active when it comes to supporting non-native products. Both Olympus and Serif are substantial companies with large user bases so it is rather frustrating to be the victim of such oversight.

First let me wish everyone a great 2021

I couldn’t solve this problem, but I did find a piece of software that sort of circumvents the issue. It’s called ‘Irfanview’. Very basic but quite effective. This lets you see the thumbnails and you can enlarge them. Also you can open files with an external program (in this case Affinity photo) Actually, you can put in three external editors to open your files with. Until Serif and Microsoft figured this one out I’m using this as somewhat of a ‘solution’.

you can download it here

IrfanView actually has some quite sophisticated features, but it does deal with the basics very well. It’s free for non-commercial use, and for those who need or want a licence it’s only ten euros.

Can anyone else verify that this works for them? I have some AFPHOTO and AFDESIGN files in a network folder. Because File Explorer cannot see those thumbnails—at least not until I have permission to install the Affinity software—I tried the workaround of viewing the thumbnails via IrFanView. However, this doesn't seem to work for these file types.

But perhaps I need to explore this more deeply when I have a bit more time.

I do use OneDrive and Irfanview Thumbnails is the only software that makes me see the Affinity thumbnails. Open ‘IF Thumbnails’ and on the left side you can pick any folder. You can see all the thumbnails on the right and double clicking opens them enlarged in Irfan View. (You can also very easily scroll through the enlarged thumbnails) Now you can open the file in any external editor. For me that is Affinity.
