Aquiring Photo's From Scanners

Recommended Posts

I'm a new user to affinity and the tutorials I have viewed show in the file menu an option to scan which seems to have been removed from my version (1.5).  How can scanning be done?  Under help there is no information.  Has this been deliberately removed or will there be an update to cover this requirement?

Menace,

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums :)

I think you have found one of the very few differences between our software on different OSs

If you are using the Windows version of Affinity Photo, then yes there is no scanning option. (It hasn't been removed so much as never added but that's just semantics) Most scanner manufacturers have only implemented 32-bit scanner drivers making it difficult for a native 64-bit app like ours. It's an odd area of support for Windows hardware. For now we suggest that you scan with the software that comes with the scanner. Frankly it's something that Microsoft need to tackle head on with hardware manufacturers and insist they work to a new standard, like Apple have.

It isn't that great on Macs either, at least for scanner drivers that rely on TWAIN plugins that have not been updated for more recent OS X versions. I have an older Canon all in one scanner/printer/copier (model MP620). Affinity doesn't recognize it for scanning (nor does Apple's Image Capture app so I can't complain too much about that).

Graphics Converter 9 does support old TWAIN plugins, even on OS X 10.11, so that is the only way I can scan images with it, unless I use an older Mac running 10.6.8 for scanning, which of course means I can't use that Mac with Affinity.
