AP • Still Hunting the Beast! (Kingfisher)

The situation is all to my advantage!

These guys would normally fish in the shallow

waters of the marsh that are frozen these days.

The ice, covering now half the area, is forcing

these swift fellows to come much closer to my

favourite shooting position.

So far for the advantages. Being what they are,

very small and darn fast, still remains the great

challenge to spot and capture  them.

Yesterday, I got these…

shot with a 600mm ƒ4 @ ƒ8 on D810.

C&C welcome and appreciated!

I do like these! A D810 with 600mm lens must be hard to hand hold—are you using a monopod or some other aid? I have seed some photos of kits mounted on rifle stalks, but I have never seen such a beast myself. Your results with the FX system are making me regret my DX family choice! Time for me to break out the weights and build some muscles. ;-)

Cool, glad you like them!

I would never recommend using a monopod with lenses over 300 mm!

I use two series 5 Gitzo's with Canadian made Jubo Black Widow Pro II

gimbals, one for the 600 ƒ4 and the other for the 200~400, ƒ4. The mo-

nopod I use (from the same maker) is for the 300 ƒ2.8, tor 70~200 ƒ2.8.

Time for me to break out the weights and build some muscles.

Muscle power is not my worry… but my left knee that since three years

is causing pain and discomfort after a domestic accident.

Thanks for your comment Solly!
