Go into the paragraph panel, and see if "After Paragraph" is set to something. 

 

That might help with what you're looking for. 

After paragraph creates a space between the paragraphs. This is exactly why one need to have force line break, to break a line without creating the space. It is specially nice for hanging indents such as bullet point or numbered list.

Control-Return, or Edit => Insert Character => Line Break.

One of the things I love about Designer is it stand way of doing things, but this one is totally off, because every program I have used, Mac or PC has used shift-return. Anyway it is there.

Control-return is used by TextEdit, Mail and Pages. It's the OSX standard.

 

Pages supports shift-return as well. I'll see if we can add support for both.
