Will Affinity Designer ever offer the possibility to Outline Strokes (not only for strokes made with the "Basic" set of vector brushes, but for any other vector brush, too) and / or the possibility to Trace an Image?

This is what I miss most in Affinity Designer, compared to Illustrator. I can't imagine working with vectors without having these essential tools. ☹️

Just would like to know if there are any plans to make this and when.

Thank you.

Hi asantos,

There is already a command to expand strokes (menu Layer ▸ Expand Stroke). It doesn't work with some "vector" brushes because a few of them use a raster texture (which is then stretched along the path) as the base for the brush. Those are not "truly" vector based shapes and as such cannot be expanded to vectors. The brush vector engine in Designer is not totally developed yet and should be expanded later to include more control/options over the brushes. We do intend to implement a tracing tool - it's one of the most requested features - but only if/when the dev teams are happy with the quality of the tracing results.

Hi Chad S,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

This is something that was already discussed in several other threads. We do intend implement/develop one but it will only be integrated if the development teams are happy with the quality of its output.

There's plenty of third party apps applications/services like Inkscape (open source), Super Vectorizer 2Vector Magic or a web services that allow you to trace images and output them as vector files which you can them import into Designer. Check those threads for more info:

- [ADe] JPEG, bitmap tracing to covert to vector

- Image Trace - Raster to Vector conversion
