exporting a logo with transparent background

I am really surprised I have to ask this.

 

So I create a logo and want export it with a transparent background as either a gif or png.

 

First problem is how to a crop the document excess size down to the logo? The vector crop tool doesn't seem suitable and drawing an artboard the exact size is a bit hit and miss.

 

Then when it comes to export as gif or png there doesn't seem to be any transparency options.

 

Coming from Fireworks I am finding AD a real usability shock.

Hi bikeman

Select the logo layer (or group the logo elements), then go to file export select the format you want and change the Area dropdown to Selection without background.

I usually create a page/artboard with the size that fits the logo or any other design. No need for croping.  :)
