Agree, this is a 'must' feature if you want to compete with what Adobe has to offer. Even in Illustrator vectorisation is not perfect, so as long as the dev can get it similar or close - it would be enough (for now) ;).

Besides, as an idea – or request – if the tracing engine could output a vector halftone pattern... that would be a killer feature that even Adobe doesn't offer. Dealbreaker. It is possible to achieve this effect in illustrator with 3rd party plugins from Astute Graphics – heres a link:

I might have to double post this link and info in the requests category, so apologies in advance :)

Hi, Dorian,

There are large numbers of bitmap tracers available, some free, most others very inexpensive. I  would hope far more for a blend tool, and a mesh warp.

A vector halftone would be fine. But Adobe has very deep pockets, and they didn't bother w. it, but left it to someone else.

I would also rather have blending and mesh warps and envelopes. I do those functions far more often than tracing and suspect others would as well. But then, I have multiple means of tracing and don't know if that influences my desire for the other things before tracing.

As regards Adobe Illustrator and the Astute plug-in, Adobe will eventually incorporate such a thing I suspect. It is what happens often enough. Astute has offered to license their plug-ins to Serif. I imagine the per-seat cost would be prohibitive for a $50 software when the plug-ins are rather more cost. But I don't know that.

Half-toning can actually be done with JavaScript and other languages as well. But without the api to do so, even a free means is impossible inside AD. However, I'm not afraid of this as a bitmap effect, either, which can be done in combination with APhoto. So it's not like there isn't an option possible.
