catlover
Hyia. I know this has been asked before, but with the Win versions becoming more popular and thus the posts becoming more numerous, the matter seems to become rather more important : Could the Win & Mac forums be separated thoroughly and permanently, please. My inbox is clogged with posts about the Windows version, even though I have marked both the entire Windows Beta sections of the forum ( AFD & AFP ) as being "Read", and the entire forums "Unfollow". You would think that marking an entire forum as being "Read" would mean that I would no longer receive notifications from them. Nothing could be further from the truth. I also "Unfollowed" both forums, to no avail. The mixing of posts pertaining to the MAS versions of both products are also becoming a nuisance. Also, the mark as Read and the "Unfollow" seem to be lifted with signing out. Please have the forum guys try and come up with a way of separating the Mac & Win forums,it is a real PITA to see an inbox full of Windows questions. Thanks a million !! mac_heibu
Staff TonyB Posted November 20, 2016 Staff Share Posted November 20, 2016 Thanks for the feedback. If this weekend is a good indication of posts then we might have to separate more of the forum. We will make the decision over the next couple of week.
R C-R
To avoid an overflowing mailbox, I long ago turned off all email notifications in the My Settings > Notifications section except for Private messages. That was before there even was a Windows beta, much less a retail AD version. I still can see new replies to topics I have posted to by looking at the "Notifications" icon at the top of each page or by the stars next to those topics. I don't know if that would help with your inbox problem, though. The moderators may come up with something to help with this, but the problem remains that a lot of the topics apply to both Mac & PC platforms, & quite a few apply to both apps as well, so I do not know what they can do about that. As it is & has been for quite some time, people new to the forums often post to the beta forums about issues with the retail apps, or to the general Questions forum about beta issues, etc., so I doubt just separating the forums into more sub-forums will help much. What might is a "sticky" at the top of the Questions forum with a suitable title (like "READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO LIVE!" or perhaps something a bit less dramatic) that explains what each forum is for, that there are multiple products, & so on -- basic info that those new to the forums should know before posting. Also, a suitably named FAQ sticky for the several recurring issues buyers of the new AD Windows version might help. This could cover things like the missing .exe extension & what to do about it; a link to a topic or the video explaining how to get the freebies & install/use them; that no, there is no bundle deal for cross platform purchases; & that yes, you will have to export Serif app docs to an interchange file format to use them with Affinity apps. By my count, more than half the topics started by new Window AD purchasers are about those things. Of course, no matter what is done, some people will post to the wrong forum. We just have to accept that as gracefully as we can, & remember that everybody is a newbie at some point & that we do not all speak the same language. catlover
Thanks, guys, Sorry if I seem to have opened a can of worms here. The thing with turning off the notifications is, that I read or at least peruse the posts because I also learn from the qustions people ask. And yes, RCR, questions about discounts, bundles etc. etc. I too find rather tiresome, for whichever product. The software is cheap as it is, and the development guys & girls are certainly doing their very best, gudgeing by the speed with which the Beta's see the light of day. Not forgetting the speedy and knowledgeable response of the moderators !!! So, no grumbling about that at all. I just wish we, the users, could turn off the forums that we don't want to receive any notifications of. C.L.
R C-R
The thing with turning off the notifications is, that I read or at least peruse the posts because I also learn from the qustions people ask. To be clear, I just turned off email notifications (the second column in the settings notifications preferences for this website). I do that for every site that offers me that option & has a lot of activity. If I did not, my email inboxes would always be cluttered with a bunch of messages I have no interest in wading through or storing on my computer. Alfred
The thing with turning off the notifications is, that I read or at least peruse the posts because I also learn from the questions people ask. Likewise, I learn from the questions other people ask, so (in common with with other forums where the facility exists) I land on the 'View New Content' page when I visit these forums. As R C-R has mentioned, there are stars next to topics to which I have posted, and if I haven't yet posted to a topic but have chosen to follow it I can use the 'Content I Follow' link in the panel that drops down when I click on my name at the top of the page. I don't have email notifications turned on for anything: I can see any new posts via the above routes, and I can see Messenger notifications via the envelope icon at the top of the page. jer
My suggestion would be to have check boxes in every new topic post that the user would have to check to identify the Affinity program and platform for which the question applies. I'm more confused by trying to figure out whether the questioner is using Designer or Photo than the other confusions. After all, the goal is to have the platform versions be similar, right, whether PC or Mac? With check boxes, at least you can figure out which app without reading very far.
