HiDPI Problems on Surface Pro 4, Windows 10

Recommended Posts

Hi,

today I tried the Affinity Photo beta. I noticed that it generally works great on the HiDPI display of my Surface Pro 4. Unfortunately though, I also noticed that it falls back to low-res for painting. This does seem to be intentional and can be reproduced with every brush. I am really disappointed since it makes it impossible for me to use Affinity for digital painting. What is the reason for that? Will this be fixed in the final release? I really like the application and would love to integrate it into my daily workflow.

Regards,

Michael Hoffer

That is exactly what I'm talking about. It seems to affect a complete region though (e.g. the bounding box of the stroke) and not just the current stroke. For me, this is very annoying and does not happen with other applications. Can you comment on whether it will be fixed in the final release?

Hi, is this where brush strokes all look very rough and jagged? I am using a small screen, Wacom cintiq companion13" and was about to report about it.  I used to get the same problem with adobe PS too but they sorted it out. The strokes made at some zoom levels look ok and at others look very rough for me. Hope it gets fixed.

This will not 'be fixed', as it's how the software draws to the screen, by doing a quick draw before an accurate draw. It what makes our software so responsive

Thanks for being so honest. As I'm a developer myself, I understand your decision. As an artist, I can't tolerate it though :( Working with highly detailed images increases this effect. Sorry for saying this. But I hate this "feature" with a passion. Please make it optional. Then the artist can decide between accuracy and responsiveness.

Please look at other applications that are also fast and don't need this kind of low-res preview . My personal experience is, that there are equally effective ways to achieve similar or even better performance. Krita, for example does pre-prendering as well. But it only reduces the path complexity and not its resolution.

The switch between lo-res and hi-res takes way too much time and does not feel responsive at all. There's much room for improvement and much has to be done before you can call it "responsive".

I really want this app to be awesome! Let me know If I can help with testing or anything else.

My problem isn't like the example shown where the stroke looks rough while drawing, my strokes made while zoomed out stay looking bad. only when I zoom in do they improve. I would like to be able to draw full screen without the wobble. The top half is drawn full screen and the bottom was drawn while zoomed in maybe 50%. A4 300DPI canvas. Is this fixable?untitled_by_runts_gal-dao9ldb.png
