periwinkle
I'm embarrassed to admit this, but as you can see in my profile pic I once figured out the steps it takes to create a sketch from a photo. But now, when I go to View>Outline with the same photo, I get a blank canvas. Can someone help me out? (I'm in pixel mode, but I tried it in regular mode, too.) :)
Staff Callum Posted October 31, 2016 Staff Share Posted October 31, 2016 Hi Periwinkle, The below tutorial is in German but it does have English sub titles :) It should show you how to make a photo look like a sketch! periwinkle
Um... I don't see the tutorial.
Alfred
Um... I don't see the tutorial. Embedded videos don't seem to be working as they should, but when I pressed the 'Quote' button at the bottom of Callum's post I could see the URL for this YouTube tutorial: Affinity Photo - Sketch Effekt (English Subtitles). Here's one in English: Transform any Photo into a Pencil Drawing (Affinity Photo Tutorial). periwinkle
Is there a way to do it in Affinity Designer?
PixelPest
I´d say yes: Cheers P. Alfred
periwinkle
Please forgive me for being a novice, but I tried the settings in the thumbnail and had the wrong result. Can you spell out the steps for me?
Alfred
What PixelPest's screenshot doesn't show you is that the upper (inverted) layer has its blend mode set to 'Colour Dodge'. periwinkle
I followed these steps: make extra bg layer. On 1st layer, b&w adj. Then, Blend Mode Color Dodge. Then invert. On the second bg layer, b&w adj. What I got was all white. I tried to follow from there with the video but the menu item was not present. What I need, if you don't mind, is a list of steps for Affinity Designer. I'm just not getting it from the picture.
Alfred
OK, try this: 1. Place image 2. B&W adjust 3. Duplicate and invert 4. Set blend mode to 'Colour Dodge' At this stage, the image should be white (or nearly so) 5. In the Effects panel, expand the 'Gaussian Blur' section 6. Move the Radius slider until you see the effect you want Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.4.1 (iPad 7th gen)
periwinkle
I did as you said, and did not achieve the result. The Gaussian Blur didn't work. BUT I got it another way. I went to lighter color blend mode after inverting, and achieved a nice pencil drawing -- with shading -- actually nicer than expected. Alfred
I did as you said, and did not achieve the result. The Gaussian Blur didn't work. Hmm ... I wonder why not! BUT I got it another way. I went to lighter color blend mode after inverting, and achieved a nice pencil drawing -- with shading -- actually nicer than expected. Yes, that does achieve a nice effect. On a quick test here, 'Lighten' does the same thing; 'Difference' yields a similar result, but markedly stronger.
