Hi hack501b,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

There will be magnetic & polygonal selection modes in the Free Hand Selection Tool in Affinity Photo 1.5.

You may also try to use the Selection Brush Tool and then the Refine selection dialog (pressing the Refine... button in the context toolbar) for more complicated selections.

Here's a video tutorial covering cutting out selections and another covering refining selections. For additional video covering this and other subjects please check the In-house Affinity Photo Video Tutorials thread.

I have the Vector Brush Tool in that position which is why I am asking the question.  Is there some way of bringing up other modes (as in Photoshop).  If so I can`t find a way of bringing it up. It looks like a good thing to have access to so I would like to try it out.  Sorry if  am missing something.

Affinity has to programs. Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo.

Affinity Photo is the program you want if you want to replace Photoshop Elements. (It's far to powerful than Elements, people are using it instead of Photoshop).

Affinity Designer is the program you want if you are into web-design and digital painting and drawing.

If you are on a PC, you can't buy Affinity Photo yet.

- Affinity Photo 2.3.0
- Affinity Designer 2.3.0
-Affinity Publisher 2.3.0

MacOS Sonoma 14.1.2

If you are on a PC, you can't buy either app yet ;) but Affinity Designer is available as a (free) beta version. The Pixel Persona in Designer has a Selection Brush Tool. :)

Hi hack501b,

You are using an Affinity software, probably Affinity Designer Beta running on Windows. As Alfred pointed out there's also a Selection Brush Tool in the Pixel Persona (menu File ▸ Personas ▸ Pixel) in Affinity Designer although this program is not directly comparable to Photoshop Elements. Affinity Photo which is our image editing program is the closest equivalent to Photoshop Elements. Affinity Designer is intended to be used for graphic/Web/UI design and illustration/painting.
