R C-R
Think of software development like a building under construction. In the early stages there isn't much there, just the framing & maybe the roof, but not much more than that. This is the alpha stage -- you can see what the building will look like when it is finished but it isn't usable for anything. Later on, flooring & walls, plumbing & electric, & so on are added. It still isn't finished -- there is no paint or finish work, but you can walk through the rooms, check how the plumbing works, etc. That is the beta stage. Affinity Photo for Windows is still in the alpha stage. When it has been developed enough, it will reach the beta stage & you will be able to test it, just like you can test the Affinity Designer Windows beta now. Does that help? It will help me when I will build a house. Not now. :) I asked this question because they said that Photo Beta will be released immediately after the final version of Designer. So, I got an impression that they don't want both betas to be released at the same time. Staff MEB Posted October 13, 2016 Staff Share Posted October 13, 2016 Hi Petar_MK, We intended to release both at the same time, but since Designer was already finished, we decided to release it first along with Photo 1.4.4 (just to add file format compatibility to Photo so you can still exchange files between them). Unfortunately due to some bugs/crash reports we received after Designer's release we decided to delay Affinity Photo's 1.4.4 a little to prevent the same issues happening in Photo as well. Just give us some more time to solve these issues. Staff MEB Posted October 13, 2016 Staff Share Posted October 13, 2016 @Patrick, That's what i thought initially but then Petar said "I asked this question because they said that Photo Beta will be released immediately after the final version of Designer". Since Designer wasn't released for Windows yet - just the final 1.5 for Mac -, i though he was talking about the Mac version which i believe he also has access too, but i may be wrong. Petar Petrenko
Hi, I am sorry I didn't mentioned. Yes, I am asking for Windows version. Staff MEB Posted October 13, 2016 Staff Share Posted October 13, 2016 Thanks for clarifying Petar. Affinity Photo beta testing will only start after Designer's release on Windows. Having just one in Beta will help us to prevent the same bugs/issues with Affinity Photo later. I believe two apps in beta testing on a new platform would also be too much alongside the betas on the Mac. R C-R
I can't wait (and not only me, I suppose) to start using Photo, too. Because you said "using Photo, too" are you aware of the potential risks of using beta software? Both Mac betas & the Windows Designer beta include a similar warning. This is part of the Windows one from here: As this is a beta release, it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. There will almost certainly be a similar warning for the Windows Photo beta when it is released. Betas are generally intended for testing & discovery of bugs so they can be reported to the developers & their cause eliminated from the final retail release version. If you use them for any other purpose, particularly for anything with a deadline or for other work you can't afford to have corrupted, you do so at your own risk. Petar Petrenko
Thank you R-C-R, but I think you are too much worried about others. Let them have their own experience. it is the best way to learn. What are people risking using beta software? Their lifes, their computers could be broken in two parts? So what if they lose some file? Even the "old" software like InDesign, Quark and others can be "dangerous", too. Have you ever read any software agreement when instaling it?
