Font Creation!

Something that would give Designer an instant advantage over Illustrator would be the ability to create your own fonts. A lot of the current applications for this role lack the incredibly intuitive design of Affinity's products. You could really personalise your work by creating your own font and exporting as a .ttf so you could use it system wide.

I have some ideas of how this could be implemented. Either have it as a part of designer or perhaps as an upgrade package. When you create the blank document, it would be divided into a grid for the different characters which you could the work on.

Thoughts?

I’m not familiar with font creation but I suppose there is much more to it than would be feasible with an AD persona or whatever an upgrade package would be. Perhaps not impossibe but certainly a very different route than what AD is currently focued on. There are people who already create fonts with AD: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/13848-typeface-design-wip

See this thread...and there might be others, I haven't looked. But this one was from a short time ago.

Adding in something of a little interest to the main core of users seems to me to be wasteful of programming time. There are plenty of font editors available. Even though CorelDraw has always had the capability, it isn't a widely used aspect of the application due to the small user interest.

There is nothing stopping y'all who want this in AD from using AD in conjunction with a font editor. There is at least one thread in the Show Your Work section where a person is doing just that.

I use various applications for vector drawing in conjunction with 3 font editors.

I fear I can only support the view of Stephan and Mike. The technical intricacies of font design are generally underestimated by people who have no or little experience in the field, and I don’t believe it would make sense to add font creation capabilities to a drawing program like Affinity Designer. There are numerous, even free, applications that will allow you achieve great results in font creation, provided you have command over the required knowledge and experience …  :)
