Contour of a selected area

Hello guys, i'm not an expert of those kind of programs and i'm not even an english speaker, so i apologize for the poor explanation of my question.

 

I would like to use Affinity (Photo or Designer doesn't matter, i got both) to draw a contour around an image that i select with the selection brush (or other tools, idk) to obtain an effect similar to the attached image (i mean the white line around the two guys that clearly replicate and emphasize the selection). Is it possible?

Yes, it's possible. If you use the selection tools and already have a selection created go to menu Select ▸ Outline, give it a radius, then fill it/paint it with the colour you want.

Alternatively you can create a path using the Pen Tool following their silhouettes then set a stroke width and colour from the context toolbar for the path.

I would like to turn a number of open shapes into closed shapes for use in another program.  Is there a command that will take a open shape i.e a line or arc and give me the outline of that shape.  As an example a 10mm line with a 2mm stroke would turn into a rectangle with a 10mm size and a 2mm size.  It would be nice if cap, join and alignment of the line segments was converted accurately.  At first I thought I could do this as a cover to curves operation (like you do on text).  However, that does seem to work.  Sorry for the newbie question.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

The command to perform this is located in the menu Layer ▸ Expand Stroke however there's still some issues to fix here (superfluous nodes, geometry not accurate in some situations). This should be improved in a future update/version.
