New size Re-Size export confusion

Recommended Posts

I set up a new document :

Photo, 1024x1024, 300 dpi
I check it in resize document it is now,
1023.8x1023.8.
I export now the size is 4266x4266
What is going on here?
I want to use the 1024x1024 300 dpi size for a 3D object texture.
I need it as clear and “crispy” “sharp” as I can export it.
I am confused.

I'm not sure about the rounding error but in your export screen shot the dimensions are in pixels. In the new doc & resize windows they are in points.

You can't change the JPEG export dimensions to points because the JPEG format always stores width & height as pixel measurements. That's also all you need to consider for 3D texture mapping -- the more pixels, the sharper the mapping will look.

The reason you are seeing 4266 x 4266 px in the export dialog is you defined the document as 1024 x 1024 points @ 300 DPI. A point is 1/72 of an inch so every point is equivalent to about 4.167 pixels at 300 DPI (300/72). 1024 of them is about 4266 pixels (1024 x 4.167).

Glad I could help. Do note that at 1024 x 1024 px your exported JPEGs will only have about 1/4th the resolution of the previously sized ones, which may or may not be high enough to look sharp as 3D textures, depending on how large the 3D objects they are mapped onto are in rendered frames.
