[By Design] PSD documents without file extension unable to open

Recommended Posts

Hi decimate555,

I can reproduce this however may I ask why you are removing the extensions?

I removed the extension from an .aphoto file and it opened with Affinity Photo but the .psd does indeed fail to open with Affinity.

We use the extension to determine most file types, including PSD, PSB, SVG, PDF, EPS, PS, AI, LFP, FH10, FH11.  If we pass this list of known extensions, we then try to open the file as an Affinity document (using our knowledge of the file format, rather than the file extension).  After this, we try loading one of the standard raster formats (PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF) - the exception here is that we test TIFF files for embedded layer data before getting into the fallback raster loading.

To automatically deduce all file types would be a big undertaking... so, we don't do it.

This is not a bug, and I think it's largely reasonable for your files to have appropriate extensions.  The exceptions to this are largely a coincidence rather than intended behaviour.

Thanks for raising this issue - we have closed it as "by design".
