[Affinity Designer] Make a new object from a selected part

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I kept searching for a way to do the same thing as the title says. Simply, I am trying to select a part of an object and make a new object from it.

For example, I have a circle, I want to select a half of it and make another object out of it.

My greetings.

I LOVE programming and vector drawing. :)

Hi SinovenatoR,

If you go to the Pixel Persona towards the top left of the app (see attached). You will find Selection tools you can use to select Pixel layers and objects, unfortunately you will have to Rasterise your objects to be able to select them using these tools.

For vector objects, using the various geometry operations, particularly subtracting one object from another, may be useful for this:

Well, thanks for your answer but I need to do this with vector objects.

I already know about that but, what if I want to take that part of the square star contained in the circle?

I mean I only want to take everything within the circle, like having numerous lines and curves passing through the circle, I want to limit them just inside the circle.

The subtraction operator subtracts upper layer(s) from lower ones so by changing the order in the layers panel you can control what remains after the subtraction operation.

Note that straight lines can't be used for this because they have no area, but as long as the object has at least three non-coplanar nodes, its area can be subtracted from a layer below it.

Hi SinovenatoR,

You can perform an intersection boolean operation (menu Layer ▸ Geometry ▸ Intersect) to retain just the part that lays inside the circle.

If you have a bunch of objects you can also drag them all inside the circle layer in the Layers panel to use the circle as a clipping object.
