gumbo23
I have opened a jpg, cropped it, and found that the rest of the area is still there. I'm pasting it into another project, but it only pastes with a huge invisible area around the cropped section. How do I fix this?
Staff MEB Posted August 15, 2016 Staff Share Posted August 15, 2016 Hi gumbo, If you paste a cropped layer into another document it should paste the full image (non-cropped). To avoid this you must rasterise the cropped layer before copy/paste to another doc. To do it right-click on the layer and select Rasterise... in the Layers panel. Fixx
This should work differently. It should not make any difference if the layer is unrasterized as it anyway contains pixel data.
R C-R
Fixx, It makes a difference because cropping is normally non-destructive -- it affects the entire document. The pixel data outside the cropped area is still there, which means you can return the document to its un-cropped state later on. In AP you do this by selecting Unclip Canvas on the Document menu. Fixx
Let's rephrase that if you make a selection and try to copy/paste that it will be the whole layer. Obviously it should be only the selection area.
R C-R
If I make a selection in AP & copy that, I do only get the selected area. Copying a layer is a different operation. Try it for yourself: use any of the selection tools to create a "marching ants" selection, copy that (from the edit menu or with a keyboard shortcut), & paste it into another document, or use Affinity's or Preview's "New from Clipboard" menu item to make a new document, etc. Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 Affinity Photo 1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.
Staff MEB Posted August 16, 2016 Staff Share Posted August 16, 2016 This depends on the type of layer you are working with. If it's a Pixel layer (type), selecting and pasting an area will copy/paste the selection contents only. If it's an Image layer type it will copy/paste the entire layer. True, but either way this doesn't have anything to do with cropping, which affects the entire document, & thus does not seem to be the best tool to use if all you want is to copy/paste a part of it for use in another document. Staff MEB Posted August 16, 2016 Staff Share Posted August 16, 2016 Yes, it doesn't have nothing to do with the Crop Tool. I was just clarifying what happens when you copy a selection from different layer types because that was what you were talking about from post #5 onwards. R C-R
My apologies. I should have made it clear I was considering only pixel layers, presumably like what one would be working with if they opened a JPEG file like gumbo23 said he did in the first post.
