Hi,

I hope I'm not creating an unnecessary topic, but I couldn't find what I was looking for in past threads. Would be good to have the forums separated by AF Photo and AF Designer as well.

I'm trying to find out if AF Photo's crop tool has the following features;

1) Crop canvas based on transparent pixels - I come from using Adobe for the past 15-20 years and their crop feature of being able to crop an image based on transparent pixels is extremely useful when trimming images. Is this hidden somewhere in the menus? Being able to do a hard crop and soft crop would be great too (destructive and non-destructive.

2) Because I was unable to find the feature above, I resorted to manually cropping. When using the manual crop tool ©, is there a way to lock the ratio, and also have equal scaling? For example, in PS you can use a number of modifier keys when scaling, transforming, or cropping. The modifiers allow scaling from the center, or keeping the ratio when dragging a corner.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. And great product! I'm very happy with it. :)

Hi INKT,

Welcome to the Forums :)

1) We do have an option to remove unwanted canvas areas, from the Document menu, select Clip Canvas. This might be what you are looking for :) Affinity Designer already uses a non-destructive Crop tool. Hopefully we will eventually port Affinity Designer's Crop Tool back to Affinity Photo :)

2) While using the Crop Tool towards the top of the app in the Context Toolbar you should see a Mode Drop Down. Set this to Custom Ratio and enter the ratio you want into the boxes to the right of the dropdown. This should hopefully do what you are looking for!

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Callum,

Thank you for your response on my questions. #2 fixed what I was looking for as far as the crop tool. But I still can't seem to find a way to trim the canvas by transparent pixels. When I enable and disable "clip canvas" it actually expands the canvas to a larger size. When I undo, it only returns the canvas to my original working size. What I'm looking for is the feature that trims the canvas based on transparent pixels, so that the end result is a canvas size that fits the layer's actual used pixels. I hope I'm explaining this correctly. The feature in PS is called "Trim", located under Image>>Trim, and set to "Based On Transparent Pixels".

The attached images show what I'm referring too. If it's not already available in AP, it would would an extremely useful addition, along with modifier keys. :) Modifier keys for everything. :D

Thanks again for your help, and I'm really enjoying using AP so far, and can't wait to see it's capabilities truly outperform Photoshop. I'm dying to get away from Adobe products.
