Just Asking Questions Posted July 4 Posted July 4 Been waiting for a while now for the 4th of July sale, like last year, and yet there is not one. Had my money saved up and ready to pull the trigger. Anyone know when the next sale will be? chessboard and Rickard 1 1 Quote
fde101 Posted July 5 Posted July 5 Serif is based in the UK; why would they have a 4th of July sale? The timing last year was likely coincidental, and appears to have been an attempt to leverage users' response to changes Adobe made to their terms of service at the time which had even more of their users looking for an alternative product to switch to as the new terms were actually quite bad. While there are sales from time to time they are usually one-time events. HCl, Ali and PaulEC 2 1 Quote
Just Asking Questions Posted July 5 Author Posted July 5 I see Christmas sales all the time on products manufactured in China (predominately Buddhist) and items from Dove, Lipton, Hellmanns, etc which are manufactured in Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Bangladesh, etc which are predominately Muslim). So my guess to your question is they might have a 4th of July sale even though they are in the UK to attempt to capture sales around that time of the year when people are looking for sales. It is entirely possible you are correct in that the timing just happened to be right for it to look like a 4th of July sale, and indeed when I went back and looked, the huge red, white, and blue banner they posted on their Instagram account with stars and symbols that could be taken as fireworks doesn't actually say "fourth of July sale" or anything, but come on, red, white, blue, fireworks, posted at the beginning of July? You can't really blame me for jumping to that conclusion. https://www.instagram.com/p/C765GXVoZSO/ Quote
Ali Posted July 5 Posted July 5 You're stretching it a bit to see that as fireworks! When your world is US-centric, you may well see things differently, and sometimes you'll see things that aren't actually there. There's a whole world beyond the borders of the US that isn't US-centric, though. Just Asking Questions Posted July 5 Author Posted July 5 I dont think that is too much of a stretch. Had it been a month before, or a month after, yeah, then that might be different. And yes, being in the US makes it a little easier to see everything that way. Not because I don't understand there is an entire world out there, but because around that time of the year we here in the US are bombarded by 4th sales, parades, banners across the streets, and more. So yeah, it is very easy to see everything through a particular lens when you see it all day every day at that time of the year. Still, it doesn't make the conclusion I came to incorrect. It also doesn't make my desire to purchase the product on sale any less real. Quote
Ali Posted July 5 Posted July 5 I think your desire to purchase in a sale is perfectly valid. 😉 Quote Ali 🙂 Hobby Photographer & Desk Top Publisher (Retired) Running Affinity Suite V2 on Windows 11 17" HP Envy i7 (8th Gen) & Windows 11 MS Surface Go 3 alongside MS365 (Insider Beta Channel). Anyone who thinks that also believes that banana bender is an official job title. To my knowledge, sales promotions are always announced in advance on the official Affinity Serif Store website. Just Asking Questions Posted July 5 Author Posted July 5 I agree, except for the tiny issue of it saying "SALE 50% OFF EVERYTHING" in the middle of that image featuring the symbolism of the US flag on US Independence Day on some social media channel. That kinda does mean they are promoting a special sales, don't you think? Quote
Ali Posted July 5 Posted July 5 SALE - yes. Star-spangled banner and/or fireworks - tenuous (for me). But I can sort of see why you might have assumed it was related to 04 July on your side of the pond. fde101 Posted July 5 Posted July 5 Just now, Ali said: Star-spangled banner and/or fireworks - tenuous (for me). The red white and blue colors are directly associated with the US flag and are common in US holidays related to either the military or the nation as a whole (Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, etc.), and the dashed lines bringing up the notion of stripes with the little white shapes resembling stars definitely give that kind of implication to a US audience (myself included). To those outside of the US who are not accustomed to the traditional US holiday decor, stepping back from it a bit, I can similarly understand how this would not imply anything of the kind. None of the shapes are actually stripes nor are any of them actually stars. I would imagine that being aware of the US holidays, Serif might have leveraged the color scheme and made some potentially intentional implications to help it fit in with the existing US holidays which happened to be going on at that same time, but at the same time, didn't really include anything that explicitly tied the sale to that holiday or made it scream "US" to a non-US audience. Of course, unless Serif themselves comment on the matter, it is all conjecture on our parts either way. Quote

Likewise for me, any connection with the US flag seems tenuous at best. The blue is much paler than the blue on the flag, the stars are four-pointed with curved sides instead of five-pointed with straight sides, and there are no stripes. Just Asking Questions Posted July 5 Author Posted July 5 (edited) 7 minutes ago, HCl said: Many countries use Red or Blue or White or a combo of these in their flags so not exclusive to the US whatsoever. I agree 100% but of those countries, how many routinely have sales on July 4th? And since I am in the only country I am aware of that sees sales every July 4th, and that has red, white, and blue (of any shade) decorations all over the place during that time of the year (also, while the flag's colors may not match, there are a TON of July 4th decorations all over the place over here that are not Pantone matches for the flag). I am genuinely curious. Can you honestly not see why a person from the US on July 4th surrounded by July 4th sales and promotions might see a red, white, and blue sale banner on July 4th by a company as a July 4th sale? Or are you just being argumentative? Would you also argue against a banner about a sale on December 25th in red and green featuring an old fat man in a white beard and red coat as not being a Christmas sale because it doesn't explicitly state Christmas? I mean there are old fat guys with white beards in virtually every country around the world, and many of those have red and green in their country flag. Maybe it is a Going Out Of Business sale in Bangladesh, right? Edited July 5 by Just Asking Questions Quote
