I wanted to try illustrating a pottery jar with cork lid, which we use to store garlic cloves. It seemed like a complicated and difficult design with a lot of nuances (it was) and I figured I would have to try out a few new techniques. I thought it came out looking fairly realistic and convincing. Hope you like it.

Wonderful work, as usual, Lou! I imagine the wireframe view looks pretty wild.

Mmm. . .I can almost smell the garlic aroma wafting through the vent holes.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.

Alfred, not as wild as you might imagine. I used a number of textured bitmap fills and overlays, (especially for the top of that cork...otherwise, a veritable nightmare), and also to add texture and color variation to the jar itself. It would have taken a lot longer to do all that manually. One of Designer's strengths is mixing vectors and bitmaps, especially for images like this one. I chose this project mainly as a challenge in how to approach it and I was reasonably pleased with the result.

Only “reasonably pleased”, huh? I can’t say I’m enormously surprised: great artists are often their own harshest critics.
