During text input in Affinity Publisher for iPad , words recognised as misspelled are marked with a red snaking line. Now it would be nice if the error could be corrected immediately. The help also states (very briefly) that you can find a selection of possible corrections in the context menu. However, this is not true, in the context menu you will only find a selection of possible text formatting. Is it possible to have such errors corrected? And if so, where can I find it?

How?

You have auto-correct that does that for some misspelled words and you can add additional misspellings to that list

How would you expect the app to respond when you type a misspelled word that is not in its auto-correct database?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, @BergWanderer. :)

If we had such an option I’d turn it off immediately! It’s much too error prone. I’ve long ago lost track of the number of times I’ve done a search on these forums and failed to find what I was searching for because autocomplete or autocorrect has changed my search term to something else, and the same would happen in APub: the app would ‘helpfully’ correct a perceived error automagically, instead of merely highlighting the word or phrase and suggesting that it should be changed.

Auto-correct and auto-complete are, in my opinion, the worst features of modern times.

For those of us that can't spell or frequently mistype words we do know how to spell, they can be very beneficial in regards not having to go back and correct every misspelled word we type

It is not about an auto-correction, but about the fact that the help tells you that you can correct a word marked in red (apparently misspelled) by selecting the correct one from the context menu. The question now is whether this is true. And if it is true, the question is how to get to this context menu.

You have to right click on the misspelled word(s)!

According to the help file for the iPad...

To correct a misspelt word on the page:

  • With one of the text tools selected, tap on the misspelt word and select an alternative from the pop-up menu.
  • You'll also be able to Ignore Spelling and Learn Spelling (Add to dictionary).

That's what I read in the help. But when I tap on such a word, no popup menu appears from which I could select an alternative. My question now is how I can get to this popup menu.

Someone with an iPad may be able to assist you further with that query as I do not use one

The effect of tapping or double-tapping seems to be dependent on where the focus was immediately beforehand. Long-pressing (pressing and holding) a word marked with a squiggly red underline consistently brings up the spellcheck options for me.

It should be noted that the spellcheck only checks spelling, not grammar.

Aha. So what the help file says is not true. We're already one step further.

However, it doesn't help if I click on such a word for a long time. No pop-up menu appears from which I could select alternatives. Is there perhaps another requirement that has not yet been mentioned?

Are you using an Apple Pencil? You may need to use a finger for this to work as expected.

I've now asked a colleague who works with Affinity Publisher on Mac and knows the iPad version. He says he struggled for a long time to find this fabled pop-up menu and finally gave up looking for it because it just doesn't work... Hmm.

That should work for you just as it does for me! I don’t know why it isn’t working for you or your colleague.

What model/s of iPad do you have? (I’m clutching at straws here, in case you hadn’t guessed!)

It's an iPad 11", OS version 18.2

For me, the last possibility is that there is some requirement that is not mentioned because most people fulfil it by themselves, but we do not. (For example, it says that you have to activate a text tool. I'm actually not sure if I understand this correctly. I selected both "Rahmentext" and "Grafiktext" in the toolbar, but that didn't do anything. Maybe it's something else I should activate? The help doesn't recognise the word "Textwerkzeug").

The only other possible explanation is that it works when it works and not when it doesn't. And it doesn't work for me. So it doesn't work for me... ;)

My screenshots show Frame Text („Rahmentext“) but it shouldn’t matter. Spellchecking in Artistic Text („Grafiktext“) should work exactly the same way.

So that means it just doesn't work. I see.

But then the other question is whether one can deactivate these red underlines. Because if they don't help, they're all too distracting. I know that they disappear if I hide all the tools. But I don't really want to do that.

On Desktop version, these red lines are also hidden when I use the Preview button (like a windshield wiper). Don't know if it's the same with an iPad…

I see. Thank you very much. I have found it.

And I also found out something new about this legendary pop-up menu: If I create a new file on the iPad and draw a text frame, the menu appears as described. But when I open a file that I created and edited on the Mac, it doesn't.

Fortunately, this is not an extremely important function, so I can do without it, especially as I now know how to get rid of these red lines...

If you can share the file, perhaps we can figure out what's going on.
