Eerschay Posted June 16 Posted June 16 Hi, I'm thinking of getting an iPad mostly for drawing, natural media style raster images. On paper, I usually use pencil, ink and watercolours, and I'd like to imitate these tools on iPad, especially when travelling. I don't really use Apple products otherwise. Would you recommend Affinity Photo for that? Are there any addd-ons especially useful - like additional brushes? I'll probably get the iPad Air 13. Quote
Benfischer Posted July 5 Posted July 5 There are better pure-play raster drawing apps for the iPad than Affinity. Procreate and Fresco to name the two most popular. I'm just starting to learn Fresco and it seems like Procreate has an easier learning curve, but people that like Fresco really like it. Specifically, Procreate has better brushes and a number of drawing-related shortcuts that help a lot. Procreate runs ONLY on the ipad so it pretty much is forced to support all of the latest ipad features while Affinity runs on many devices so you end up with a least-common-denominator level of support. Fresco is part of the Adobe world, though it's free and you don't to subscribe to anything to use it, so it's definitely more professional. And, perhaps most importantly if you are just getting started, Procreate and Fresco have MUCH better community support with way more videos on YouTube to follow and other sources of tips, tricks and training than you'll find with Affinity. There are some things that Affinity does better, specifically I like Artboards in Designer as a way of organizing work, and it actually uses the file system vs Procreate storing all the files in the app and some things just make more sense to me in Affinity, like Affinity specifies brush size in pixels where Procreate specifies brush size as percentage (of of what?). But overall, if I were to start out with raster images, I wouldn't start with Affinity. If you're going to be doing a lot of text or vector stuff, then Affinity makes more sense. Eerschay 1 Quote
