This impo to know prior to being forced into an update that is not compatible with my apps. Apple have a record of doing this, so just trying to catch it before the issue arizes. Quote

Everything will work just fine on iPadOS26....eventually. Don't install the beta if you are concerned, I will be. My 7th generation iPad is currently on 17.5.1. Updating iPadOS to 18.5 apparently requires at least 11.54 GB of available storage, but (because the total amount of installed memory is 32 GB, almost half of which is occupied by system data and the currently installed version of iPadOS) I need to move a humongous amount of stuff to an external SSD in order to free up the necessary space. I had only just started to do that when I was warned about the potentially disastrous effects of going ahead with the OS update, so I’m going to steer clear of iPadOS 18.x for the time being. Yeah, to think Apple give users 5 free gb of storage, golly how generous. I thought the point of a synch was to keep all devices consistent. I have 4 Apple devices and they give me 5 GB of storage to synch. Its pathetic for a wealthy, company like Apple to treat customers this way. Such a greedy and monopolistic biz. Yeah sure I can buy more, but they go out of their way to fill your device. File app says Move when it actually does a copy, and the menu item to delete is off screen and requires user to scroll to see it….disgustin! Quote

Whilst I agree that 5GB is low for 2025, and I hope Apple do increase that I have never considered iCloud to be a synch’ing service. iCloud is set up as a master repository rather than a synch’ing service. If any of my devices are stolen/lost/destroyed I know I can be up and running in a very short time on a replacement device. I’m more than happy to pay for iCloud, as it serves as a master repository for all my photos, videos, and data. I do also have multiple TM backups as well for 40+ years of legacy PC data I don’t have in iCloud and occasionally access. Yes exactly, I dont synch either, but I believe that is what the iCloud is designed to do! I want backup and repository, I refuse to give Apple any more money and use iDrive to backup PC and IOS and am very happy with the service. Initially signed up for iDrive $5 USD for 10 Tb, upon renewal price jump up but it works well, and refuse to give Apple any more money. Quote

They bait uninformed customer's with a low cost version in order to get them to buy another device….nefarious business practices. Apple worms! Quote

I think the ipad saves a copy of items on the local device prior to uploading. This makes the save seem very fast, but in actuality sucking local memory. I have found that items save to icloud, when the cloud was unavailable, are still saved locally. The when available can take its time uploading. Other services cant do that because they aren't in bed with IOS. You probably know this better than I. King Canute 😊 Quote

Yes saving to an iCloud folder is simply a save to a local folder. When suitable internet connection and device power is adequate or connected, files are uploaded to Apple servers but remain in local folders until the Apple servers confirm safe complete arrival. Files still exist in local folders and may stay there several weeks/months or years depending upon when they were last accessed taking into account free device storage. Files not accessed for an extended period of time are then deleted and replaced with the iCloud link to conserve device space when needed. If a file updates on another device the iCloud version will be used to replace the local copy.
