I was wondering if anyone had cobbled together a set of simple highway route number "shields" such as you'd see in road atlases for use in Affinity Designer or Publisher as Assets.

FYI: I'm still using v.1.10 here due to financial and hardware limitations.

I imagine that constructing your own should be relatively straightforward and not too time-consuming, but it will depend at least in part on how fussy you are about using the correct fonts.

I've made do with assets from other sources, given the simplicity of my transit activism goals. Clearly, a work in progress, and I'll continue the discussion of how best to further build up the map elsewhere, probably in the "Show Your Work" forum. Closing the thread here.

Back in the late 60s, a carload of us from a helicopter company located at what we called "the old schoolhouse" would attend the Orleans Hotel for their lunch. It was excellent. One day, properly lubricated as we were from the lunch and the beer, we drove past a bank robbery in progress. Ah, the good old days. (That old schoolhouse, as we called it, is still there and once again functions as a school. I don't know about the apple orchard that was next door.)

Across the road and down a bit, the barn that was once our airframe shop is still there, too.

We were a beginning company back in those days. Over time, we graduated to operating aircraft around the world.

I’ve always suspected that your forum username is a play on the name “Tulane”. Thanks for confirming my suspicion!

Back in “the good old days” were you really lubricated not only by the beer but also by the food?

By the way, the Resources section of the forums is intended for users to supply (share) resources, not for users to request them. I mention this so you won't be surprised if a moderator moves your topic to Desktop Questions, the more usual location for questions :)

Nah. Not even close. It has to do with the old blue highways on road maps from the distant past.

The Orleans I speak of is near Ottawa.

@DEWLine's map of Orleans is in Ontario, and has nothing to do with New Orleans. I cannot confirm that @Twolane is reminiscing about time  spent in that city/suburb.

I am amazed that I know these things. I have never been anywhere near Ottawa or New Orleans.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

I’ve likewise never been anywhere near New Orleans, as far as I recall. The closest I’ve ever been to Ottawa is Toronto, and that’s hardly what you could call close!

Attended the 1986 Worlds Fair in New Orleans.

Wife called me at work.
Said her sister's boyfriend has gotten four really cheap plane tickets to New Orleans.
And they want us to go with them.
I asked "How much?"
She said "$186."
I asked "Is that one-way or round-trip?"
She said "Round-trip."
I asked "Is that for each of us?"
She said "No, for both of us."
I said "I guess we are going to New Orleans."

$186 for two people round-trip from LAX to New Orleans.
Even back then that was insanely cheap.

Also did the usual New Orleans tourist stuff in addition to the fair.
It was fun.

Ahhh... forgot what I came for...

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) supplies standard highway signs in vector format.
The website is a confusing mess.
So start here: https://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/kno-shs_2024.htm

There are PDFs with all the specifications, and sample images.
And the vectors are in ZIP files.
Have to dig a bit to find what you need.
As they update stuff they just add pieces, which is a bit confusing.
So there are parts from 2024, 2012, and 2004.

The highway route number shields are in the Guides section.

Some examples from the PDFs:

I once downloaded all this stuff - which took quite awhile.
And now I do not know where it is. Typical.

Anyway, if you want realistic looking route signs, these are the real deal.

Hmmm... I have the fonts too... somewhere.

My wildly off-topic contribution:

If you ever get the chance, go there, if for nothing else than to sample the incredible local cuisine. But resist the urge to go during Mardi Gras & never ever drink more than one Hurricane. :)

Wishing that I knew where to look for the relevant stuff re: the province of Ontario...but I should be okay.

Thank you kindly.

Ahhh... I was not paying attention that you are in Ontario.

There is some agreement or association where they agree to use the same or similar road markings.
There are links to other similar agencies on WP.
Here is the info on the Canada agencies with links which should get you to the info..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manual_on_Uniform_Traffic_Control_Devices#Canada

Includes the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.

I think they all have some sort of standard sign drawings.
They want all cities and towns to be able to easily comply with the standards.

On Mac at least, if you still have the original downloaded file, you can find its origin in the Info panel:
